From the DSCC:
Yesterday Republican Senator Rick Santorum said he was pleased by President Bush’s threat to veto a House bill to loosen restrictions on stem cell research. Too bad he’s already said that the president should defer to Congress on the stem cell issue:Yesterday, following the House’s Approval of Loosening Restrictions on Stem Cell Research… Santorum Said He Was Pleased By Bush’s Veto Threat. Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., one of the Senate’s staunchest opponents of abortion, said he was “disheartened” by the House’s approval but pleased by Bush’s veto threat. [AP, 5/25/05]
But in 2001… Santorum Said President Should Defer Stem Cell Issue to Congress.
“I think this is an issue that should be worked out in the Congress, and the president should defer,” said Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), who opposes research on embryonic stem cells. [Washington Post, 7/17/01]
