So much for McCain being the “sane” Republican:
In an interview with Arizona Daily Star editors, Sen. John McCain endorsed teaching “intelligent design” in the nation’s schools because “he believes ‘all points of view’ should be available to students studying the origins of mankind.”
Oh, good. I look forward to Edgar Cayce’s explanation of how the earth was formed being added to the curriculum. Oh yeah, and that Mormon story about the spaceships. And the Scientology thing about the thetans…
Don’t like McCain, don’t trust him, never did. He might not be as bad as most Republicans, but that’s not saying a whole hell of a lot.

Sorry Susan. Can’t agree with you here. I am a liberal and a Christian and I believed in intelligent design before anyone had named it that. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together can see that evolution is real. You can watch it happen right before your eyes for crying out loud. But that same brain tells me that there has to be something more to the universe.
I don’t have an issue with telling kids, “some people believe this, others believe that,” so long as there are no value judgements involved. Kids are smarter than most adults give them credit for. Let them see the whole picture and trust them to make up their own minds.

Mike G,
So you think ID should be taught in science classrooms where testable theories are taught? Evolution may not be proven beyond all doubt, but many aspects of it have been pretty well tested and retested, producing the same results. Basic scientific processes. However, ID is NOT TESTABLE! It is more suited to a classroom where belief is taught and discussed, not a classroom where tested theories are taught. Try comparative religion or social studies. Do not try to masquerade faith as science. And stop fooling yourself - you’re probably smarter than that.
McCain proves that even “moderate Republicans” certifiably insane…or at least inane.
How come Dems don’t make a reasonable effort to go after Republican Senators who hail from Blue States…I’m thinking Biden here.
I don’t have a problem with intelligent design - I’m an astrologer, for heaven’s sake! (You can’t get much more esoteric than that.) But I do have a problem with intelligent design being taught as EQUIVALENT to science.
And even thought I’ve been studying astrology for 25 years, I don’t want it taught in the public schools. Even though it might be more useful than home ec…
Mike G,
You are missing the point. Evolution is not automatically contradicting religion. The fact that we have a pretty good scientific theory about how we evolved is not an explanation for the existence of the universe. You are free to believe in the great maker who created the universe, or make up your own story.
You can also still believe that after God created the laws of nature, he just sat back for a few billion years and is watching the results, kinda like a computer game.
However, there is pretty good scientific evidence for the process of evolution, and if you want to throw that out of the window just because you think it is too complicated, than you are no better than cavemen who invented thundergods because they didn’t know how lightning was generated.
Sure there is a possibilty that God created everything and put the dinosaur bones in the ground to fool us. However, since there is no evidence available for that theory, it has the same validity as the 100+ other theories about the creation of the world. Why should the Christian version be more right than the Cree version? After all, there is no evidence for either of them.
Plus, there is the Flying Spaghetti Monster who created the world.
ID should be taught in church, not school.
And McCain’s simply trying to position himself for 2008. He’ll never get my vote. This is a man who was personally vilified by GW in 2000, and yet he still bends over and takes anything and everything Bush dishes out. I have zero respect for him.
A simple explanation for a complex problem: Intelligent Design seems to be the perfect appeal to a portion of the population that wants to be comforted, not challenged.

Suburban Guerilla finds John McCain forgetting about his strategy of positioning himself as a moderate.
