9/11?
Seven minutes to respond to the World Trade Center attack.
8/29?
Three days to respond to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. (But hey, cut him some slack - he was on the last week of his month-long vacation!)
And people thought it didn’t matter that he was slow and stupid…

Remember, too, that Bush ignored the PDB entitled “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in US” and that the cut the funding for levee reconstruction in New Orleans.
Slow and… did you say “stupid”? I would say, “criminally negligent.”
Ralph, I already said that in a post that runs tomorrow morning.
My husband and I looked at a map of Louisiana. There are several military bases north of the “there’s no-place for you to live any-more zone”.Walk, boat, and bus everyone to tent camps set up at those primary points. Move out and expand from there. Start clean-up.Its the most powerful way to react. Otherwise more will die in the next 10 days then in the storm.
Bladerunner I was just wondering if the bases you stated included England AFB in Alexandria. That was closed in 1992 and turned over to the local government that made it into an industrial park, Ft Polk is still in operation and so is Barksdale AFB but many bases that show up on maps have been closed. All closed bases are turned over to local governments for their use. Most maps are not updated to reflect the closures mostly because the American public doesn’t think about the military until it is in the news. Some Guard and Reserve bases may be listed but most are incorporated into airports, industrial areas etc. You are right, they could go to most Army posts that have places like gunnery ranges that could be turned into tent cities. The kids can take turns looking for unexploded ordinance. Air Force and Navy bases are usually crammed for space but they could always put them next to the runways or docks.
I’m not discounting your idea for it has great merit but unfortunately since our government started down sizing the military a lot of the bases and posts that the general public sees on a map simple don’t exist anymore. I know because I’m a retired military type and I used to travel extensively and would look for them.
