Fred & Ginger, who did everything Fred did, only backwards and in high heels
It’s a nice clip, and the line is funny, but it’s not really accurate.
Ginger was talented in many respects, but as far as dancing goes she wasn’t really in the same league as Fred. She spent hours and hours rehearsing with Fred’s assistant, Hermes Pan, in order to learnt these routines. Reportedly she often ended up with bleeding feet on account of the high heels.
Fred made some movies with dancers who were technically better than Ginger, such as Eleanor Powell, but somehow they didn’t have the same chemistry.
I would attribute this to Ginger’s acting ability.
Fred often said that his favourite partner was his sister Adele, but she married an English peer and retired from performing before Fred went into the movies, so we don’t have any film of the two of them. If you like to do crossword puzzles, keep this in mind though, because “Adele” often shows up as an answer.
The Fred and Ginger movies are classics. Ginger brought a lot to those films. However, her dancing was not in the same league as Fred’s. Not to criticize, but Fred was one of the greatest dancers in all history, while Ginger was a pretty good dancer and also a talented actress. Actually one of Fred’s skills was to make his partner look better than she might be on her own.
Ginger was very talented as an actress, singer, etc. But it is not realistic to claim that her dancing was in the same league as Fred.
There were probably only one or two people in the world who were in in the same league as Fred (e.g., Gene Kelly), so this is not to criticze Ginger.
Let’s just say the between the two of them, they made some classic films. Fred’s technical abilities wouldn’t have been so successful without Ginger’s personality.
