Call Your Senators and Critters

Have you called your senator and congress critter today?
I called Arlen Specter’s Philadelphia office this morning and asked what Sen. Specter intended to do about the White House blocking contempt charges. I got some asshole who said matter-of-factly, “Well, there’s nothing he can do. If the Justice Department won’t pursue the charges, that’s it. There’s nothing left to do.” He spoke as if I were an annoying child. I mean, why would I think the ranking senator on the Judiciary Committee could do anything?
I got mad at his smug tone. “No, that isn’t all he can do. It’s time Senator Specter starts thinks about his own place in history and whether he wants to be remembered only as a partisan hack. There is a constitutional remedy, and it’s called impeachment.”
The guy repeated himself, I called him a “hack who might as well be selling drugs” and hung up. Then I called Specter’s D.C. office, where the person who answered the phone was a lot more polite.
I told her I was an ordinary person who just wanted to live my life, but that this president was scary. I said it was time for the Republicans to start talking about impeachment. She told me she would make sure the senator got the message.
Of course, Arlen Specter has pretty consistently ignored the message of the people, but you never know.
Call your senators and congress critters today - especially if they are a Republican. Tell him or her you are shocked and worried that this president thinks he’s above the rule of law, and you want him impeached.
This is a lot more important than a blowjob.
Oh, and Pelosi’s office number is (202) 225-0100.

I had already emailed her, but I’ll call, too.

Well, I spoke to Specter’s office this morning about the situtation. It was a cordial, and constructive, conversation between an aide with who I’ve been engaged in a NUMBER of heated exchanges.
I mentioned the article: he hadn’t seen it yet, but knew about it. Was this a view of executive privilege Specter takes, and how does it fit into our system of checks and balances? “I can’t answer for the Senator but that’s not how the system works”
And then we talked about it. If this is true, shouldn’t congress just go home, since the WH is taking congress’s perogatives for itself? “Well, if that’s true… but the Senator probably wouldn’t support something like that.”
And then I mentioned that this isn’t the first time the WH has tried to usurp Congress’s power and mentioned the AG scandal. “They deliberately slipped the language in in such a way that your boss looked like the culprit. And I know how mad he was about that.”
And I brought up that if this is allowed to stand, what will happen when it’s a democratic president.
It was a good conversation. The aide seemed genuinely concerned. I think they may have finally overstepped, but I’ve said that before and been proved wrong.

however, conyers office said they’re not doing anything about this until Bush administration officials say it to their face. Yawwwwn.
