The man who WROTE “O Happy Day”? No. Maybe the man who arranged this particular version.
The Edmund Hawkins Singers’ version is nice, but go search out the Davis Sisters’ version from twenty or more years earlier. Their version is slower and much more soulful in whatever sense of that word you choose.
You might have to buy a turntable to listen to it, however; I don’t think it’s on cd. But it’s worth the trouble–they were one of the greatest groups (and from Philadelphia, like the Ward Singers and the Hummingbirds, eventually) of gospel’s golden age.
