I was having brunch with a friend yesterday, another former political operative, and we were talking about the election. He confessed that he was a little worried that “someone” would shot McCain and wound him, turning him into a hero. I said that was a little far-fetched, and he responded, “Then why has he turned down Secret Service protection?”
Hmm. “Bob Roberts,” anyone?

The Times has him relenting on this two weeks ago, but I have no idea if McCain actually did it.

he just started getting the protection in the last day or two…

drugs stiiii-ink,
hang ‘em high for a clean livin’ land!!!
I’m no McCain supporter but the notion that a 72 year old man who has already survived horrendous wounds (something which will definitely affect his life-span) is going without Secret Service protection in the hopes that some competent, but not too competent assassin will get close enough to wound him without killing him seems a tad farfetched.
