I wasn’t physically hurt by the bullies, but the teasing most certainly left deep scars on my developing sense of self. I was teased by kids because of a stutter; teased by a few adults because I went to public school and not Catholic school. Even the few friends I had at one or another time did things that said I wasn’t worthy of friendship. By college, I largely stayed to myself and inside a world I built through reading. Slowly, in college I found groups who accepted me and with whom I felt comfortable but many of these friendships rarely lasted longer than college. It still reverberates in my life, especially issues involving trust.
