‘Bargaining chip’

“I’ve said I’m open to making modest adjustments to programs like Medicare to protect them for future generations”
– Obama

I am still of the opinion that Obama plans to use this fight over the debt ceiling to get his Grand Bargain. Nothing I heard today indicates otherwise.

“Modest adjustments’ means Americans are gonna die. I wish there were billboards showing the body count of Corporate decision makers. Just like the anti-smoking campaign, we’d see the number of dead to date resulting from lack of adequate health care, inadequate food, unjust wars, unrestrained gun violence and all the other avoidable situations the 99.5% are faced with each day. All so Corporations can keep their profits up for Our Corporate Masters.

Fine idea, Ron – but for the same reason we ship coffins of our war dead back to Dover, Delaware in the middle of the night and prohibit any public access – we will NEVER compile statistics showing the tremendous damage done through passing along all these “externalities” that corporate capitalism constantly places on buyers and users of its products, workers who make the products, the public and the environment that are exposed to by-products and wastes of such products, etc.

And of course he wants to use the debt ceiling to make some obscene cut to Medicare, Social Security, or both.

Notice he used the phrase “…balanced and responsible…” in describing his approach to further deficit reduction approaches.

When people start sounding like Fox News, you know we’re screwed.
