Retirement

What’s that? I’ve never seriously considered it. I can’t afford to stop working. How about you?

63yr old – 64 this yr – two full time jobs, looking for third – retirement savings gone, lost bulk of money buying house priced at five times it’s current value, which I left in 2009 because even I am not tough enough to live with guns in my face on my own doorstep

    good times
retirement? must be a french word for something they have that we don’t

You really don’t believe that the 1% wants anyone to retire do you? Here’s the thing. In a Capitalist economic system it’s fairly easy to make money. If….if….you follow a certain path and the breaks fall your way. What’s difficult is keeping the money that you’ve made. Without universal health care coverage only a healthy few (it’s in the genes) never get their pockets picked by the vulture health care providers. Then there’s geography, skill level, education and most importantly of all….luck. “Life sucks and then you die.” Some made plans very early on, never got distracted by the ad men, and have been very lucky. They have “beaten the system.” Which implies that there is a system in place (put there by the 1%) that must be overcome.

Retire? I expect that I will die deeply in debt working until that day.

Boohunney – I feel your pain. After 2 1/2 years out of work with no prospects, I now have a job paying significantly less. It’s tough out there looking for a career in your 50′s.

Four and half years ago, I had retirement in my sites. Then the 1% executed their grand design. Then everything that I had believed would provide retirement income was pretty much wiped out in a couple of months. House is now under water and retirement accounts (because you know private is so much better) lost so much that I’m back were I was in my early 40′s. Am I bitter? You better fucking believe it.

57 going on 58. No way I can retire unless I inherit some money. Meanwhile I live in abject fear I’ll lose my job. My only hope is that my salary level actually makes me a pretty good bargain, although I’m always fearful some techno-whiz college grad will come work for peanuts. Hopefully my industry experience will trump that.

Maybe we can all start a commune and grow our own food.
