‘One Nation’ Rally Saturday

I really wanted to make this, but I can’t. However, there will be buses leaving from every city within an 8-hour drive:

Hoping to overshadow last month’s rally led by Glenn Beck that drew thousands of Tea Party advocates and other conservatives, a coalition of liberal groups plan to descend on Washington on Saturday to make the case that they, and not the ascendant right, speak for America’s embattled middle class.

Predicting a crowd of hundreds of thousands, some 300 liberal groups — including the N.A.A.C.P., the A.F.L.-C.I.O., the National Council of La Raza and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force — are sponsoring a march on Saturday in the hope of transforming the national conversation so it focuses less on the Tea Party. The groups sponsoring the rally, which is called “One Nation Working Together,” say they hope to supplant what they say is the Tea Party’s divisiveness with a message of unity to promote jobs, justice and education.

“The Tea Party has been getting much more media attention than it deserves, and it’s been saying it represents the voice of middle-class America,” said George Gresham, president of 1199 S.E.I.U., a New York health care union local, who says his union has chartered 500 buses to carry 25,000 union members to the rally. “A lot of us feel we have to get a different voice out there speaking for working people, one respecting the diversity of this country, which the Tea Party does not.”

Rats

Will Bunch is in the hospital and they just found he has two clogged heart arteries — complicated by another condition they have to get under control first.

So naturally he’s freaking out over his new book, which is rapidly dropping in the Amazon rankings because he’s not able to promote it. (He was in the top 100 last week and now he’s in the top 1000.)

If you’re interested in this great book, this would be a good time to buy it (it would be good to keep a blogger from having a heart attack, yes?) and if you already have it, it would be a good time to recommend it to all your friends.

Desperate Times

My son passed this along and asked me to do something. It’s from someone who posts in one of the forums he frequents, and his parents need help NOW.

There are, of course, a lot of people who need help right this minute. But this is the one that fell into my lap, so I figure I’m supposed to do something. Can you help, too?

In 2004 dad was diagnosed with PAD, peripheral artery disease. It started with him having slight pain when he walked long distances. Over the years it’s gotten steadily worse, and now he has nagging pain even at rest. Still, because he has no car, he walks everywhere, taking the bus where he can. The pain for him is unimaginable. But he bears it.

In 2008 dad lost his job. We’re from Las Vegas, and he’d worked in the casino industry, mainly as a poker dealer, for over 30 years. As you may know, Vegas was hit hard and early by the economic crash, and even today suffers some of the worst unemployment in the country. It wasn’t long before me and my parents were evicted from our apartment.

Luckily for us, my sister and her husband provided for us to move in with them out here in Michigan’s upper peninsula. For two years my dad lived here, on unemployment, continually applying for work at the indian casinos in the region. Any other job he’d be qualified for paid less than he got on unemployment. None of the casinos ever offered him a job.

One Nation March On Washington

ONE NATION
IS ABOUT REORDERING OUR NATION’S PRIORITIES TO INVEST IN OUR MOST VALUABLE RESOURCE
— OUR PEOPLE.

Event Date: October 2, 2010

Location: Washington, D.C.

On Saturday, October 2, 2010, hundreds of thousands of Americans from across the country will gather at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. to demonstrate our re-commitment to change. The One Nation March will feature human and civil rights leaders, labor leaders, environmental and peace activists, faith leaders, celebrities and sports figures – all marching together to help Put America Back to Work and to Pull America Back Together. And to help reorder our national priorities so that investments in people come first.

We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to achieve the American Dream — a secure job, a safe home, and a quality education — but banksters and corporate lobbyists have made off with trillions of public dollars while small businesses can’t get loans and cities are laying off teachers, police, and firefighters.

In this time of economic crisis, it is easy for fear-mongerers to pit groups against each other and to find convenient scapegoats for the problems that plague us.

ONE NATION seeks to transcend our superficial differences and bring us together in a common quest for equal opportunity and justice for all.

ONE NATION
HAS A NEW
STORY TO TELL
AND WE WANT
YOU TO BE
A PART OF IT.

This movement includes human and civil rights organizations, unions and trade associations, nonprofit organizations, youth and student groups, religious and other faith groups, educational, peace, environmental, and ethnic associations, and any other groups and individuals who are committed to pulling our country back together now. As of late August 2010, there are more than 150 ONWT organizational partners and tens of thousands of individuals.
