There’s so much meanness in Rethug Amerika. Blocking help to a woman trying to establish she’d been raped, separating and robbing a couple of their lives and possessions. For the life of me I can’t figure out what possible rationale one could generate for such cruelty. Any bets that Xtian fundy is at the core of both stories?
OK, I know I’m a bit late to this, mostly due to mixed feelings.
Yes, what happened to this couple was horrible and horrific. The Hospital and County should ABSOlUTELY have honored their documents, no question. Yes they ought to be sued!
Having said that, hear me out.
Let’s face it, to obtain Marriage Rights, one has to actually get married. Granted, Gays and Lesbians are not afforded that right and should be.
However, in California, Domestic Partnerships do exist and they do carry quite a few of the ‘Marriage’ rights.
I’m not sure if those to elderly guys were aware of that – they were aware enough to have legal docs drawn up, but I don’t know how long ago that was.
If they had been registered Domestic Partners this may not have happened. It may still have – I don’t know.
I do know that un-married hetero people don’t have any rights either (although many are more lax about that, sad to say)
Mind you, I’m a Lesbian, I’m in a Domestic Partnership. We only entered into that so I could be part of her Healthcare benefits. We’ve been together for almost 14 years. We planned to get married in Holland – paperwork held us up. And then she got laid off as well.
