Part of me says “that has GOT to be a photoshop!”, but then, other parts of Guatamala have sinkholes too. I guess they didn’t propitiate the rain gods sufficiently.

The sides of the hole look too smooth and regular.
I’m fairly certain that National Geographic has a policy that requires indicating when images have been ‘shopped. If you follow the link and click “More Photos” you’ll see similar images from several different photographers and agencies …
