The Apple Didn’t Fall Far From The Tree

What a great story. Last night Alice Tan Ridley, a NYC subway singer who’s been performing her heart out at the 42nd St. station for 20 years, made it to the next round on “America’s Got Talent.” As if that wasn’t interesting enough, she’s also the mother of Oscar-nominated actress Gabourey “Precious” Sidibe.

And what a set of pipes:

  1. A remarkable talent. And what makes me sad is that she sang two great songs of a style that just isn’t being written anymore. “At Last” was a gorgeous ballad from the ’50’s, while “I Will Always Love You” started life as a Country & Western song. Most music put out to day is pablum designed to appeal to 14-year-olds. She’d be better off is Michael Buble invited her to open for him on his next tour.
