  1. I’ve liked the movie and disliked it at the same time and in turn. I always wanted to see the stage show but didn’t; my sister promised to take me for for birthday one year and then only bought me the Broadway cast album. I disliked that the filmmakers took out two of the show’s important songs — “There’s No Way to Stop It” and “How Can Love Survive?” which set up the movie reason for the family to leave Austria after the annexation of Austria by Germany. Eleanor Parker and Richard Haydn, though do a great job in their supporting roles. (The movie must be considered on its own, separate from the real story of the Von Trap family.)

Indeed. Because the Von Trapps actually took a train to Trieste, which wasn’t nearly as picturesque as climbing over Maria’s beloved mountains in a direction which leads straight into Germany!
