  1. The pipeline isn’t the problem, it’s just the focus issue. Oil from tar sand requires the muck to be boiled, which takes an incredible volume of water; the sand sinks and the oil floats, and the toxic water is dumped back into the environment. Processing the muck also requires mega-therms of natural gas to keep the boilers going. More fracking, anyone?

  2. The problem is that the decision to pull the tar sands out of the ground and burn the hydrocarbons they contain might make it impossible to reduce atmospheric CO2 to a level that won’t wreck the climate.

  3. They actually seem to go out of their way to find more inefficient ways of obtaining fuel. But, silly me, it’s not even about fuel, it’s just about some company making money.
