Funny too that, though I’m one of those hard-core populists given to polarizing rhetoric, I share that writer’s sense of relegating myself to the sidelines. It’s a lesson for me personally in what I have in common with someone I would not normally consider a fellow traveller. Obama promised hope and delivered despair. But imagining a scenario where the walls of false division between regular people fall, where we find our common ground and build change together, finally gives me real, though still faltering, hope.
