  1. At Ian Welsh’s site someone noted that in San Francisco, the longshoremen have always been, and remain, a seriously hardcore union. Like the Egyptians, they have leverage, because they can shut down west coast shipping. Along the way to stopping foreclosures or rejecting student loan debt, it is going to be fascinating to watch the way people organize to do these things, and the enduring communities and alliances that emerge. To cite a local example, in Atlanta parts of the city have remained liberal through all the years of right wing hegemony. The reason is that the folks who brought you the civil rights movement are still here, and those personal connections and history of activism never ended for those people. So even when the rest of the state went mad, veteran activists were able to at least hang on to parts of the city here.
