Solstice

And it was Jane who spoke
she said, it’s true, your cousin’s not a Christian
“But we love trees, we love the snow, the friends we have,
the world we share
And you find magic from your God
And we find magic everywhere.”

“The Christians and the Pagans,” Dar Williams.

A very happy holiday season to everyone who’s celebrating. I dedicate this song to you and yours:

So the Christians and the Pagans sat together at the table
Finding faith and common ground the best that they were able
Lighting trees in darkness, learning new ways from the old, and
Making sense of history and drawing warmth out of the cold.

  1. Spent an hour (2:30-3:30 a.m.) sitting on my front porch watching the eclipse. Quite spectacular, what with Orion starkly visible only a few degrees to the south.

  2. Well, the world didn’t end last night, as some new agers have suggested the Mayan got it wrong by two years. ‘Course, in two years nothing’s going to happen either… not even a once in three hundred plus years eclipse. It’ll be just another Winter solstice, followed by just another New Years’ Day.

The eclipse was vibrant, despite the subduing cloud cover. Not quite the blood red of eclipses past but a pretty ‘pale” red never-the-less. And the southward declination is particularly notable. Well worth the earlier than usual rise.

With that, the worst decade – the George AWOL Bush decade – of my life is over. Here’s hoping for a brighter more profitable decade through the next.

    YULE!

  3. Ahh-hh, Solstice – the reason for the season, (and my birthday). A little hazy in Seattle to see the eclipse, (is that more shadow or just thicker clouds) but its great that this once in a lifetime event happened in our lifetime. Crossing the galactic equator in a couple of years will be interesting, too. I’m hoping it ushers in many progressive changes for the better. Too bad the Mayans aren’t here to generate another 5,000 year calendar.

  4. All the season’s best to everyone. Be glad in the blessings you have and may the new year bring a better world for everyone.
