In America, this guy would sob on a few talk shows, collect a fat insurance check and then be recruited by the GOP to run for Congress. Think I’m kidding? Let’s see what happens to the owner of that Texas fertilizer factory:
(Reuters) – Bangladeshi lawyers and protesters chanted “hang him, hang him” on Monday as the owner of a factory building that collapsed last week killing nearly 400 people was led into court dressed in a helmet and bullet-proof jacket, witnesses said.
The drama came as rescue officials said they were unlikely to find more survivors in the rubble of the building that collapsed on Wednesday, burying hundreds of garment workers in the country’s worst industrial accident.
Heavy cranes were being used to lift huge concrete blocks from the wreckage of Rana Plaza, where 385 people are now confirmed to have been killed. The building housed factories making clothes for Western brands.

I guess anti depressants aren’t widely available in Bangladesh…..
Hundreds are still “missing,” and at this point there’s not much chance they’re still alive. So the toll will be closer to 1000.
When they actually arrested a few people that was my first thought, too. “I wonder what it would take to see that here?”
When the President appoints billionaire Capitalists like Penny Pritzker to his cabinet nobody from the 1% will be going to jail any time soon. There’s a thick red line drawn between “us” and “them.” They do the crimes and we do the time.
We have had it drilled into us for the past 65 years that we could not exist without those wonderful capitalists who graciously descend from the clouds and trickle down on us. We have been taught that we must pay homage to these great, great people without whom we would have nothing.
That’s the difference between us and the people of Bangladesh, who may lack the same thoughtful instruction with which we have been provided.
As a result, in Bangladesh they say “hang them”. Here, we would say, “isn’t he about due for a big raise?”.
Nothing will happen regarding the Texas situation. All hail the corporate shield.
There is something seriously wrong with a political culture that refuses to submit the question of the owner’s responsibility for that lethal explosion in West, Texas to a grand jury. In most of Europe the illicit storage of regulated chemicals would be charged. Here it’s Bhopal, Deep Water Horizon and West happens.
It’s shame that we Americans love our cheap clothing so much.
BooHunney – Yep. And maybe not as many Teevee channels as US and all those fancy gadgets – iThis, iThat and all that nonsense to keep people passive and sedated.
If at all a protest happens here, we can imagine teabaggers waving placards saying ” keep your government hands off our factory deaths”.
