I thought this song or at least this performance was amazing the first time I heard it. I’m not the biggest fan of Leonard Cohen, though. There is something appealing about his songs, but after you’ve heard enough of them you notice his schtick (all songwriters seem to have a schtick). And once I learned Cohen’s schtick, his songs seem not nearly as good.
The thing about this song is that every “Idol” franchise around the world has made this into a kind of absurd karaoke standard. For a laugh, go on you tube and watch all the Idol contestants of the last 15 years murder this song. My favorite (for laughs only, it is wretched) was a very histrionic version by a young Swedish woman. IIRC, she ends the song on the floor.
