5 Things Donald Trump Learned From Howard Stern

On August 5, 1994, Howard Stern ended his campaign to become governor of New York. He had promised to resign anyway, if elected, “before I can really screw anything up.” His running mate would carry out his commitments: actively pursuing the death penalty and using the ashes of executed criminals to refill potholes. Stern was dropping… Continue reading “5 Things Donald Trump Learned From Howard Stern”

Funny How That Particular Fox Typo Still Hasn’t Been Corrected Everywhere

Here’s the headline for a Fox Nation thread about the FBI’s interview of Huma Abedin: Notice something wrong with the headline? It doesn’t refer to Abedin as Clinton’s “Closest Aide.” The word used is “Closet.” That’s also true on the Fox Nation homepage: The FN thread links back to an opinion piece at FoxNews.com, where the… Continue reading “Funny How That Particular Fox Typo Still Hasn’t Been Corrected Everywhere”

Greece sentenced to death

By new EU austerity measures:

During the debate, opposition parties argued pension cuts and tax hikes would prove recessionary, dealing another blow to a population fatigued by years of austerity.

“The measures will be a tombstone for growth prospects,” said Kyriakos Mitsotakis, leader of the conservative New Democracy party which leads in opinion polls.

Tsipras was re-elected in September on promises to ease the pain of austerity for the poor and protect pensions after he was forced to sign up to a new bailout in July to keep the country in the euro zone.

Monday’s reforms are part of a package that aims to generate savings equivalent to 3 percent of GDP, raising income tax for high earners and lowering tax-free thresholds.

It increases a ‘solidarity tax’ and introduces a national pension, while phasing out benefits for poor pensioners.

Jersey tomatoes making a comeback?

Tomato ripening in Australian "winter"

For anyone who’s ever eaten one, this is very good news indeed. The tasteless, mushy things that pass for tomatoes now are a very pale imitation:

The Jersey tomato, red, ripe and juicy, was once revered as the best to be had, with a tangy, sweet-tart flavor that was the very taste of summer.

If that kind of tomato perfection has faded to a dim memory in recent decades, blame mechanized harvesting and long-distance shipping, which prize durability over flavor. Pulpy, thick-skinned, flat-tasting tomatoes became the unsatisfying norm.

“The old, soft tomatoes split too easily, so you couldn’t ship them,” John Hauser, a farmer in East Brunswick, N.J., said. “But newer tomatoes, while they look good and hold up well, made people start to understand that beauty is only skin-deep. A lot of flavor was lost.”

This season, Rutgers University introduced a reinvented version of a tomato variety from 1934 that reigned unchallenged for decades. After years of work by Rutgers plant specialists, this old-fashioned tomato with old-fashioned taste has returned as the Rutgers 250, named in honor of the university’s 250th anniversary.

“This was the tomato that made the Jersey tomato reputation,” Thomas J. Orton, a professor in the department of plant biology and pathology, said of the 1934 variety. “It was a groundbreaking tomato that redefined what a tomato should be and was the most popular variety in the world. At one point, it represented in excess of 60 percent of all tomatoes grown commercially.”

Hillary Clinton - The Time Is Now!

In the past week or so, I’ve seen a lot of Democrats who are oh, so upset about the idea that many Republicans are now beginning to coalesce around Clinton. You know, as if that proves she’s a Republican.

And the months of insisting Bernie would get a lot of independent and Republican votes just vanish. Poof! I’m not sure if the research has changed recently, but it was always true that the larger chunk of independents were mostly Republicans who thought the GOP wasn’t conservative enough — but who tended to vote that way, anyway. So the bulk of Bernie’s support has always come from, well, Republicans.

Does that still prove something?

Canned

I just love this story.

NBC10 reports a 28-year-old woman and a 46-year-man heard an unlocked sliding door open went to investigate. The couple found two men, who had broken into the apartment.

The woman attacked one of the suspects with a bag full of canned goods, while the man pushed the other suspect out of the house, according to Metro Philly.

The suspects fled the area.

Obama Speaks At Howard University Commencement

It’s the start of graduation season, and President Obama spoke at the Historically Black Howard University graduation ceremony earlier today. The Washington Post reports that Obama emphasized that “racism persists, inequality persists. But I wanted the class of 2016 to open your eyes to the moment you are in.” …And in front a predominantly black audience… Continue reading “Obama Speaks At Howard University Commencement”
