Gasoline was the toxic by-product of kerosene and was being dumped all over the countryside until Carnegie, a fine Capitalist, decided that because it was highly combustible it would make the perfect fuel to run internal combustion engines.
The rest is history, polluted waterways, fouled air, dead wildlife and all.
