Sure would be nice if the FDA went back to doing unannounced inspections of food plants (after Bush was elected, they suspended them and while Obama restored some regulations, Trump got rid of a lot, I assume that’s still the rule) instead of counting on recalls to do their job for them. Because from what I can tell, most people never even see the recalls!

I couldn’t agree more. I returned a recalled item just a few days ago (a pre-made salad that contained chicken recalled due to listeria). Usually I see recall notices on the bottom of my grocery store receipt … but it is almost always after the item has long since been consumed. With inspections, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
