The doom loop

This has always been my worst fear about climate change: the worse it gets, the more geopolitical chaos it causes; the more geopolitical chaos there is, the harder it is to cooperate to fight climate change.theconversation.com/a-doom-loop-…

  1. There’s more than the social feedback loop. There’s physics and chemistry loops, too.

Once the permafrost starts melting — the reports show it has started — it releases so many greenhouse gases humans can do what they like to try to reduce the problem. It’ll be out of our hands and we’ll just have to survive as best the remnant of humanity can until centuries, or millenia?, have passed.

And that’s just one physical feedback loop. There’s plenty of others. The Gulf Stream stopping. The Thwaites glacier sliding into the ocean.

If people had any concept what they’re doing, we’d stop burning fossil fuel yesterday. All of it. Immediately.
