  1. Decades ago I participated in once-a-year astronomy meetups in the Deep South. Confederate battle flag was the main thing on their logo, which made us nonlocals queasy. (Don’t remember _any_ black people, at those events, even though the big NASA facility at Huntsville was not that far away.)

    When I tentatively suggested that, hey, maybe we could just have an astronomical design, I was really surprised at the depth of feeling about Our Heritage.

    To them it was all mint juleps under spanish moss gently swaying from live oaks in the evening breeze.

    A bit like finding out that someone’s really taken with the bluish shades at the edges of gangrene.
