Yeah, laying off all those postal workers will really help the economy. Jesus, once upon a time I used to be impressed by academic credentials, but when you see how many stupid people there pushing this austerity crap, well…

The oligarchy has become so inbred (in much the same way that Southern white racists have) that their ability to reason has deteriorated past the point of no return. They have now become a vampire class which feeds off one another. Has anyone here been to Martha’s Vineyard lately? How about Windsor Estates in Florida?
Yea, well, i worked for the USPS for 35 + years, the last 17 + as a manager. I dealt with the NALC extensively, and though I had my differences with individual shop stewards, I’ve maintained my belief in the need for Unions. Having said that, here is an article from Crooks and Liars that probably sums up completely the position the Postal Service is in, and the head of the NALC hits it right on the head. The last time I checked there were 220,000 members of the NALC (to whom I owe my employment in the USPS, BTW).
Oh, forgot the article (Duh!):

Yesterday NPR’s Tell Me More had a segment on the postal service, the planned closings, and the planned layoffs.
The following comments from the transcript (at link above) provide in a nutshell what has caused the current financial problems, how they could be remedied, and, alas, show perhaps a hidden agenda on the part of Congress in imposing this pension burden on the US Post Office. Union breaking, anyone? Oh, and the Post Office has been running a profit? Right through the current Great Recession and Jobs Depression.
For all its faults, NPR still covers important information which is hard to find elsewhere on the MCM (Mainstream Corporate Media).
I would appreciate input from anyone who knows more about the FERS contributions Mainor mentions. Is this another example of directed payment perhaps being used to permit those big tax cuts to the Top One Percenters, which go mainly to the Xero Dot One Percenters?
It used to be that working at the post office (and the telephone company) was one of the prime jobs a working class person could aspire to. It was part of the core security of the nation to provide employment and basic social infrastructure (all those little country post offices) and a vital service to support business and families. It is no wonder that the oligarchy has zeroed in on the post office as a target for destruction. They want the mass of people to be dependent, insecure and weak. They target pensions because pensions represent security for the future. Pensions are promises made to get people to accept less income in time of prosperity, and they are promises made to be broken and never kept.
In this situation it looks pretty clear to me that the legislation that set up this situation was actually designed and intended to fail.
