because the state-by-state polls has the president winning by a comfortable margin (by about 60 electoral votes according to nate silver’s model, see right hand margin here, or by 130 electoral votes according to electoral-vote.com). no state-by-state model i have seen has had romney ever ahead.
jon chait’s question only makes sense if we had a national popular vote, in which case the race would be too close to call. but we don’t, so if you count what the state polls predict about the electoral votes, obama is winning comfortably. the romney campaign knows that too, that is why they have gotten so nasty. it is borne of desperation.
Well, Snuzy said it better than I can, but here’s mine anyway-
P. Obama vs Romney is like Brock Lesnar on meth and armed with a AS-12, going up against the Star Wars kid and his shower rod lightsaber.
He has an almost-50-state ground game, a well-oiled PR machine, and a staff so disciplined they make the Prussian Army look like the Hutaree Militia. Also, too, P. Obama can talk to actual humans without frightening their children or causing them brain bubbles from the cognitive dissonance.
Clearly, Romney’s no politician. If he had an inkling of political know-how he would’ve (1) had a much easier time of it on his overseas trip, and (2) even W. had some respect from our Allies after 8 years, regardless of how the American electorate felt about him.
Also, regardless of any other aspect of this presidential year, Americans like steadiness in the Oval Office—-even W. stuck to his guns(unfortunately for the country). RMoney is such a Flipper who knows where he will come down on any particular issue in a crisis???
Pre-election polls and exit surveys fail to account for the Rebubs’ vote-suppression and tabulation=tampering skillz.
