  1. Could it be people wise up and realize they are overspending on trendy clothes? I’ve certainly opted for more conservative classical styles (e.g Eddie Bauer, Lands End type stuff) that I wear year after year. I avoid cheaply made stuff that doesn’t last.

And nothing is more depressing than those horrible dressing rooms at department stores when your body is 50+ yrs old. Who wants to go do that??

  2. As men get older they become single again. As long as they are married, their clothes are cleaned and new one bought when needed. As they may become divorced or widowed, they no longer have someone to take care of their clothes and they start becoming seedy and unkept. I see it in my neighbors and on the bus — men who once were neat and clean become sloppy.

  3. Oh, I’d think it’s related to sexual and economic competition. Up until 50, a guy’s thinking he can get that next promotion or hook up. After 50, you begin to realize you’ve hit the ceiling and keeping up that fab wardrobe is a cycle of diminishing returns and sunk cost. After mid-60’s to 70’s you’re into retirement and . . . well . . . fuck that shit.

  4. After 50 you become icky and creepy, and you realize that, unless you have lots of money, its all over and you might as well be dead.
