Win a scholarship to Netroots Nation

I love Netroots Nation. It’s hard to be depressed when you’re around so many bright, passionate people who are working so hard to make our country better, and it’s always fun to meet people face to face when you only know their online personas. So I’m happy to tell you about this great opportunity to win a NN scholarship:

Want an opportunity to win a scholarship for Netroots Nation 2012, the country’s biggest gathering of progressive activists?

Netroots Nation is teaming up with Rally.org for the first-ever Raise the Future contest, which invites people from around the country to fundraise for progressive causes for the chance to win an all-access pass to Netroots Nation this June in Providence. Ten winners will receive an all-access pass to the conference, hotel accommodations and invitations to VIP events (a $1200 value).

Sign up at rally.org/raisethefuture.

It’s easy to participate: just recruit the most donors for one of the six featured causes—or choose one of your own—using the Rally.org fundraising platform. This contest is unique because it’s not about how much money you raise, but the number of donors you engage.

The featured causes include Elizabeth Warren for Massachusetts, National Wildlife Federation Action Fund, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Washington United for Marriage, Truman National Security Project and New Leaders Council.

There’s still plenty of time to sign up (and win!). The contest runs through May 15, with finalists announced May 17th.

It takes less than four minutes to get started. Sign up at rally.org/raisethefuture.

Alert for PA voters

Please call your state senator’s office TODAY:

The Pennsylvania Senate is poised to vote on legislation that will disenfranchise thousands of voters — possibly as early as next week when the Senate returns from recess.

House Bill 934, which was passed by the state House last summer, would deprive voters of the right to cast a ballot if they do not show a valid state-issued photo ID card, with only a few limited exceptions.

This will particularly affect non-drivers (senior citizens who no longer drive, persons with disabilities, and residents of urban communities who travel by public transit), and the challenge of securing a non-driver photo ID card from PennDOT will be costly, difficult, and impossible for some.

Supporters of the bill have been unable to show any evidence of voter identity fraud in Pennsylvania, because safeguards against fraudulent voting are already in place in our state.

Worse yet, the legislation will cost Pennsylvania taxpayers millions to implement.

Long lines at polling places are likely to form, leading other voters to simply give up and go home.

You know what they’re trying to do. Pick up the phone and call!

Senator Robert P. Casey Jr Supports Internet Censorship and Imprisonment Without Charges

Senator Robert P. Casey Jr. is a coward, a phoney, and an enemy of the US Constitution. He voted to throw one of our most basic and sacred rights -the right to habeas corpus, to face your accuser and hear the charges against you, and to enjoy the services of a lawyer- right down the toilet.

If it was 1776, Casey would stand solidly with King George. That’s why he doesn’t deserve your support in any way, shape, or form when he runs for re-election. And boy oh boy, does he WANT that support: if your inbox is anything like mine, you get at least an email a week from Blob’s campaign, begging for cash to fight off Karl Rove.

I’m not big on revolutions (too many of them end up making things worse for everyone, as Stalin’s victims would tell you). But when I read shit like this, it makes me want to roll out the guillotine.

I suppose that makes me, and probably you, a terrorist in Bob Casey’s eyes.

It was Obama who asked for Citizen Imprisonment Law

Says Sen. Carl Levin:

PETITION: http://wh.gov/D0B We have only a few days to speak up before the President signs NDAA 1031, permitting citizen imprisonment without evidence or trial. The bill passed by Congress absolutely DOES NOT exempt citizens. Section 1031 reads, “A covered person under this section” includes “any person who has committed a belligerent act”.

– Confusingly, Obama previously threatened a veto for 1032, but NOT 1031. 1032 is UNRELATED to imprisoning citizens without a trial. He has never suggested using a veto to stop Section 1031 citizen imprisonment. In fact, it was requested by the Obama administration. Watch the video for proof.

– The Feinstein Amendment 1031(e) is dangerously misleading. Don’t be fooled: In the text of 1031(e), “Nothing in this section shall be construed…”, the only word that matters is “construed” because the Supreme Court are the only ones with the power to construe the law. The Feinstein Amendment 1031(e) permits citizens to be imprisoned without evidence or a trial forever, if the Supreme Court does not EXPLICITLY repeal 1031.

Congress planned to give it to him to sign on Dec. 8, but delayed at the last minute. If we act urgently to tell our friends, family, and colleagues, we can still prevent this. Here is what we can do:

1) Americans must know about this to stop it. Urgently pass this petition as widely as possible: http://www.change.org/petitions/stop-ndaa-section-1031-citizen-imprisonment-l… Contact the media to clear up confusion about the facts mentioned above.

2) Congress can still block the law before December 13. Write and call your Representative and Senator telling them to stop NDAA Section 1031 and the dangerously misleading Feinstein Amendment 1031(e).
