We Keep Books from Children and Then Blame Them For Not Reading

Happy Fourth!

This wasn’t a million years ago. This was a moment ago: The realization that the public library—idealized as a democratic place of learning and sanctuary, where the life of the mind was more ostensibly important than the color of skin—was not a haven for all was not new. As scholar Karla Holloway has written in BookMarks:… Continue reading “We Keep Books from Children and Then Blame Them For Not Reading”

RNC’s Sean Spicer: FBI’s Decision Not To Charge Hillary Is A ‘Clear Indictment’

https://twitter.com/mattspencedc/status/750395418970775552

Republican National Committee (RNC) chief strategist Sean Spicer insisted on Tuesday that the FBI had issued a “clear indictment” of Hillary Clinton’s judgement even though it declined to recommend a formal indictment against the presumptive Democratic nominee. “These findings of the FBI are a clear indictment on Hillary Clinton’s judgement and fitness to be president,” Spicer… Continue reading “RNC’s Sean Spicer: FBI’s Decision Not To Charge Hillary Is A ‘Clear Indictment’”

I don’t believe Bernie is ever going to endorse Hillary

And at this point, it really doesn’t matter. Somewhere around 80% of his supporters already support her, and he missed the crest of whatever wave of influence he might have had. All this hoo-hah about the platform is just silly. He already got most of what he wanted (because it was mostly the same thing Hillary wanted, anyway) and he’s turned off a lot of his own former supporters with this kind of self-serving parsing.

In other words, he’s reduced himself to a historical asterisk. And personally, I find it really annoying that 1) a non-Democrat considers himself to be the only expert on the Democratic party, because a lot of good Democrats have fought hard for the same working Democrats Bernie thinks he discovered and 2) that Donald Trump now regularly quotes Bernie Sanders to attack Hillary as corrupt.

Survivor on Orlando gunman: ‘He was not going to stop killing people until he was killed’

It was my honor to attend and photograph the Orlando vigil for the victims of the Pulse shooting at the Dr Phillips Center for Performing Arts. Thank you to everyone who came out to show your love and support of each other, we showed the world what Orland

ORLANDO, Fla.— Patience Carter and two friends cowered inside the handicapped bathroom stall, injured and pinned by a crush of bleeding bodies, the gunman who opened fire in the Pulse nightclub kept talking. “He said, ‘Are there any black people in here?’ I was too afraid to answer,” said Carter, who is black. Carter continued: “There… Continue reading “Survivor on Orlando gunman: ‘He was not going to stop killing people until he was killed’”

Reports: Orlando Shooter Visited Nightclub; Used Gay Dating App

FLORIDA-SHOOTING/

Well, this is an interesting twist that makes the whole “terrorism” explanation a little less plausible and a hate crime explanation just a bit more solid. Omar Mateen, the shooter, apparently frequented the Pulse nightclub several times ahead of the shooting. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Mateen had visited Pulse at least a dozen times, a… Continue reading “Reports: Orlando Shooter Visited Nightclub; Used Gay Dating App”

In memory of

akyra murray

Akyra Murray, 18, an All-Catholic basketball player, just graduated from my alma mater and was shot dead in the Orlando massacre Saturday night:

Last month, Akyra Murray signed a national letter of intent to attend Mercyhurst University on a full-ride scholarship for basketball, a sport she once doubted she was good enough to play.

Omar Mateen had other intentions for the recent West Catholic Prep graduate.

Murray’s name was added Monday to the list of victims that Mateen shot and killed early Sunday at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, where she was celebrating her graduation.

After Mateen opened fire, Murray, 18, called and texted her parents as she bled. She screamed for them to come get her, but died along with 48 others.

“She just graduated last week,” her father, Albert, said by phone from Orlando. “She was kind, helpful. She helped everybody.”

Murray was a quiet force at West Catholic, where she transferred at the beginning of her junior year. She built herself into a 1,000-point basketball star with daily workouts, silencing her freshman critics and paving the way to a free college education.
