Only one

I didn’t expect to like this, but I really do. It’s a song in the voice of his dead mother talking to him. (Nori is his daughter.) Kanye West and Paul McCartney:

NEMA HTF Announcement

I never liked her, but I also don’t want to see our state AG’s office in the hands of Republicans. Hopefully, our new Democratic governor gets to appoint her replacement if she’s indicted:

The special prosecutor and grand jury investigating allegations that Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane leaked secret information to a newspaper have found evidence of wrongdoing and recommended that she be criminally charged, according to numerous people familiar with the decision.

The panel concluded that Kane violated grand-jury secrecy rules by leaking investigative material in a bid to embarrass political enemies, sources said.

Some of those familiar with the grand jury presentment say it recommended charges that included perjury and contempt of court.

The statewide grand jury sitting in Norristown has turned over its findings to Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman, who must decide whether to affirm its findings and arrest Kane, the state’s top law enforcement official.

Me and Dr. Zhivago

drzhivago

It is so damned cold today, and I had to go out and order a cake for my daughter-in-law’s baby shower. I tried to get the cake at least somewhat customized, but Stock’s bakery has been around 125 years and they do a certain thing. They have their system, and it’s not going to change. I’m willing to settle, since their cake (which tastes better than just about any cake in the city) is $25.25. I could have gone to the hipster bakery and gotten exactly what I wanted, but that would have been $200 and I can’t afford that. Even if I could, I don’t think I could bring myself to pay it.

Anyway, I stopped for some soup at the local cafe. Everyone was wearing coats and hats, huddled over bowls of soup or mugs of hot beverage. I had to laugh; it reminded me of Dr. Zhivago, where Omar Sharif and Julie Christie were hiding in the old mansions that were filled with snow and ice.

On my way home, I stopped at a light. There was a young guy standing on the corner, lighting a cigarette. He had no hat. I rolled down my window and yelled at him: “Pull up that hood or I’m going to tell your mother!”

I drove away, chortling to myself.

GOP House wants Paul Ryan’s magic unicorns in budget projection

Instead, the House – to be followed soon by the Senate – has adopted a rule that forces the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office and Joint Committee on Taxation to favorably-alter economic projections of Republican policies based on nothing… Continue reading “GOP House wants Paul Ryan’s magic unicorns in budget projection”

You’ll never guess how Fox News spots the bad guys

When I heard this, I couldn’t quite believe it. The way she says it, as if it’s a perfectly obvious thing — wow. Talk about white privilege!

Fox News anchor and Supreme Court correspondent Shannon Bream reacted to a Paris terror attack by suggesting certain skin tones are more typical of “bad guys” than others.

On the January 7 edition of Fox News’ Outnumbered, the panel of hosts discussed the terror attack on the offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo that left 12 dead. Co-host Kennedy Montgomery suggested profiling may not always be an effective prevention policy because “sometimes bad guys don’t look like bad guys.”

Bream echoed the sentiment and wondered whether the ability to identify the skin color of the assailants in Paris would have helped law enforcement in this case. Bream suggested profiling may not be effective in situations where criminals are wearing masks or where the tone of their skin doesn’t “look like typical bad guys,” apparently implying that certain skin tones should raise red flags for law enforcement:

BREAM: That’s my question about these guys. If we know they were speaking unaccented French and they had ski masks on, do we even know what color they were, what the tone of their skin was? I mean, what if they didn’t look like typical bad guys? As we define them when we think about terror groups.
