Tim Moore was a Tyler art school grad who played the drums in Woody’s Truck Stop (which included Todd Rundgren). I saw them at the Trauma a couple of times, but I never met him. We did seem to know a lot of the same people. And this song was always in the background, somehow. I was performing in a weekly cabaret on Penn campus, and I had a secret crush on my jazz pianist/accompanist, who ended up dropping out and moving to Boston. He called me and told me to come on up, we could get plenty of work, but when I told my then-boyfriend I wanted to go, he proposed to me instead and I didn’t know how to turn him down. Forty years later, I’m turning 60 and haven’t really accomplished any of my dreams. Christ, that’s depressing.

AUGUST 27–A tuxedoed Seattle man was arrested early yesterday after he fired a gun at a couple who accidentally interrupted him while he was being pleasured by a woman in an alcove in the city’s nightlife district, cops report.
The couple told cops that they were walking on a downtown street after 2 AM when they happened upon Paul Hunter, 64, receiving oral sex from a woman. After being spotted by the duo, the woman “immediately left,” according to a Seattle Police Department report.
Hunter, police report, “got angry and started walking away northbound.” But after about half-a-block, he “turned around, pointed his gun at them” and fired a shot at the couple. “I’m going to kill you,” Hunter said, according to the victims.
[…] A witness who lives near the alcove where Hunter was interrupted, said that he heard Hunter yelling at his female companion prior to the shooting. Cops noted that the witness recalled Hunter saying that he “had given the woman money and was angry at not getting anything in return. He heard them continue to talk about stepping into the alcove to finish things.”
The witness told investigators that while Hunter and the unidentified woman “were standing there, the victims rounded the corner and interrupted Hunter and the woman in what they were doing.” As Hunter walked away, the witness added, he turned and fired a single shot (which did not strike the victims).

An Alabama megachurch recently held an open house to showcase their $26 million multipurpose complex complete with a 12-lane bowling center, wedding venue, fitness center, and cafe.
Faith Chapel Christian Center located near Birmingham funded the project with tithes and offerings from their more than 6,000 members. Although the entertainment center has been open for a year, the megachurch is just now getting around to introducing it to the low-income community that it is located in.
“People may not want to come to a church, but they’ll come to a bowling alley,” Pastor Michael Moore told AL.com. “People have needs other than spiritual needs. There’s a need for safe, clean, uplifting, family-oriented entertainment.”
Moore notes that the center, called The Bridge, was built for the community because family-friendly social options were lacking in their town of Wylam, which he calls “an area that’s depressed.”
Antoinette Mays, the spokesperson for Faith Chapel told a local Fox News affiliate back in July that Moore had a vision for the complex years before beginning construction.
“We want kids to walk in and have a wow moment and think, ‘A church can do that?'” said Mays. “We want this to be an inspiration for little kids, for other pastors to say ‘Hey, we can do his too! ‘ It’s a place where people will come and be ministered to.”
Coal ash kills

A report released by human rights groups in Pennsylvania on Tuesday questions whether cancer rates and other serious health ailments among inmates at a maximum security state prison are connected to an adjacent coal waste dump. If so, the breach of environmental justice could necessitate shutting down the prison, they say.
The State Correctional Institution-Fayette is located in LaBelle, a rural Pennsylvania town that is also home to a 506-acre coal ash dump that contains about 40 million tons of waste, two coal slurry ponds, and millions of cubic yards of coal combustion waste, owned and operated by Matt Canestrale Contracting. The Canestrale facility receives coal ash waste — known to contain mercury, lead, arsenic, hexavalent chromium, cadmium, boron, and thallium — from coal-fired plants throughout the region.
The investigation, “No Escape: Exposure to Toxic Coal Waste at State Correctional Institution Fayette” (pdf), documents health problems — respiratory, throat, and sinus conditions; skin irritation, rashes, and hives; gastrointestinal problems; and cancers — among inmates at SCI-Fayette. In interviews and correspondence with researchers, over 80 percent of prisoners reported respiratory, throat, or sinus issues, such as nose bleeds, shortness of breath, and lung infections; 68 percent reported gastrointestinal problems; and more than half described skin conditions like rashes or hives. Between January 2010 and December 2013, 17 prisoners died while at SCI-Fayette; 11 of those deaths were due to cancer.
The report states that Matt Canestrale Contracting, which has owned and operated the dump since 1997, is in “perpetual violation” of the Air Pollution Control Act: “Ash is regularly seen blowing off the site or out of haul trucks and collecting on the houses of local residents as well as the prison grounds at SCI-Fayette.” The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency does not currently classify coal ash as hazardous waste.
