Rolling Stone on the stealth efforts to make the U.S. over into a Christian nation:
The Dominionists are also stepping up efforts to turn public schools into forums for evangelism. In a landmark case, the Alliance Defense Fund is suing a California school district that threatened to dismiss a born-again teacher who was evangelizing fifth-graders. In the conference’s opening ceremony, the Dominionists recite an oath they dream of hearing in every classroom: “I pledge allegiance to the Christian flag, and to the Savior for whose kingdom it stands. One Savior, crucified, risen and coming again, with life and liberty for all who believe.”
Cass urges conference-goers to stack school boards with Dominionists. “The most humble Christian is more qualified for office than the best-educated pagan,” says Cass, an anti-abortion activist who led a takeover of his school district’s board in San Diego. “We built quite a little grass-roots machine out there. Now it’s my burden to multiply that success all across America.”

Well, in the competition for the few remaining jobs in a post-globalizagtion America, I suppose that we should cheer those who surrender early.
Thats the creepiest pledge I have ever seen.
Amen
Too many christians, not enough lions. These delusional whackos will be the death of this comatose country.
That was creepy…but maybe, just maybe these whackos have already seen the peak of their ‘power’.
Bush has been re-elected and they got several new members in congress. But, now the prez can’t seem to get anything right and his approval ratings are dropping. He is a lame duck and the congress, who have to go up for re-election in 2006, no longer fear him and are concerned for their own hides. They are beginning to realize that their main constituency is not made up of Dominionists.
Agreed. I also think a great deal of the people who are decent christians are starting to become aware of exactly what kind of “christians” these people are. I am not religious myself but my parents are. They are both pro-choice and anti-war and hate the shit out of bush.
Ryan? Izzat so? Where the h…eck have these decent Christians been hiding for the last several years? How come they’re only now “starting to become aware”? Of course, I hope that is the case but frankly I don’t see too many signs of it. I don’t doubt that there are decent Christians, but I haven’t seen a whole lot of organization or action on their part to combat the excesses of the righties. I fear that because they’ve been so cowed by the onvoking of God by the GOP at every turn, they have interalized the idea that God is with the GOP.
zen_less… we haven’t been hiding. I don’t think any of us “decent Christians” thought our faith would be so totally hijacked by the GOP and the far right. It is so against what the Bible teaches us. In the beginning we weren’t offended by what they wanted to do - but as the extremism set in a lot of us watched in disbelief. This is NOT the God I know. I look at the tolerance of Jesus in the Bible and I shudder to think what he would have been branded as today. Matthew 6:5 says “When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.”
God told us how to acknowledge him and it’s not the way these right-wingers have choosen. And we are trying to organize - the faith forward blog started a wonderful project where we can basically say “We are Christians too,” and there are others. But since there were elements of the right’s initial agenda we agreed with, alot of us didn’t see where this was leading - I never dreamed it would become an attempt at total take-over of my government. Now we do and we are trying to take our faith back.
Also part of the reason is that there aren’t any loud mouth jackasses like Falwell, Robertson, Dobson, Delay, etc. on our side. The loudest people get the most attention but it doesn’t necessarily mean the majority agree with them.
