“A coalition of former congressmen is launching a campaign to change how Americans select their president by reforming the Electoral College system, saying campaigns for the White House should be reliant on the nationwide popular vote rather than simply the outcome in a handful of swing states,” the Chicago Tribune reports.

“The bipartisan group plans to announce its proposal Thursday and begin a state-by-state effort to amend the Electoral College so the winner reflects the view of the country instead of an individual state or two with a close vote on Election Day. The plan would seek to eliminate the possibility of a candidate winning the popular vote but losing the election, as happened to former Vice President Al Gore in 2000.”

Says former Sen. Birch Bayh (D-IN): “The time is long past to not play Electoral College roulette every four years. It is a throwback to 1887.”

Good riddance to the EC. BTW - Did you catch the piece on the RW nutcases that, if you read the Constitution “exactly”, the President is always referred to as “he” so ergo the President must be a man…

This is good. I had thought that it was dead. I am, however, inclined to preserve the Electoral College but change the way the votes are counted, making the division of each state’s electoral vote representative of the popular vote. I view that as a better approach because it probably can be accomplished without some states for whatever reason, fighting tooth and nail for their “power.”

Huge mistake it takes the power away from the states and gives it to the central government. Plus a canidate could never visit, see, or care about 90% of the country and as long as they were able to win the Northeast and California be President without truly be representing the views of the country on a whole.
