This just breaks my heart. You know, most Americans don’t understand (and many don’t care) that the trade agreements with the United States have actually created the situation where Mexicans can’t make a living in their own country. (Assuming the little girl is Mexican. Who knows?) For one thing, we’ve flooded the markets down there with dirt-cheap American-grown corn and undercut the ability of farmers to make a profit.
So when people start bitching about “those people” coming here and taking “our” jobs, I want to slap them:
During a question-and-answer session, one girl took her immigration concerns to the top, telling Mrs. Obama that her mom says that “Barack Obama is taking everybody away that doesn’t have papers.”
The first lady replied that they have to make sure people living in the United States have the proper citizenship papers.
“That’s exactly right,” Mrs. Obama added.
“But my mom doesn’t have papers,” the worried girl said.
“Well, we have to work on that,” Obama said. “We have to fix that and everybody’s got to work together in Congress to make sure that happens.”

I’ve been wondering how soon that family will be moving out of town–or whether the little girl’s mother will be targeted by ICE.
