Cultural Identity

I don’t remember all this angst during the ’70s and ’80s, when young Irish-Americans and Irish immigrants in the U.S. started raising money and running guns for the IRA. Maybe it’s okay and even romantic when people who look like you do become terrorists freedom fighters?

I reserve the right to see these instances as the results of troubled individuals catching the wave of the zeitgeist to play out their own personal dramas.

  1. Thanks for reminding me… I actually had a frat brother talk to me about supporting the IRA in the late 70s… whatever they were feeding him, it worked… He was very passionate about his belief that All Good People throw them some dollars…

He was drunk, and I blew it off…

  2. Susie,
Thank you for the putting this in context. And I agree with you, this is all about self-aggrandizing men (mostly) acting out their personal issues.
