9/11

Am I the only person who’s repulsed by this media orgy of terror porn? Yes, it was a terrible tragedy. How very fortunate for those military and strategic interests that were bolstered by it. Do I feel any worse for the people who died in the WTC than I do for the innocents we killed in retaliation? No.

I suppose I’ll have to turn off the television that day or my head will explode.

  1. There are also those who have figured out a way to make money on it. Apparently somebody is selling a pre-packaged exhibit called “Healing Fields” that organizations can get and set up as a local fundraiser.

The district has sold more than 2,000 of the 3,000 flags on display. Flags can be purchased starting Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. at the information and flag sales center at the cemetery. Flags are $35 per flag and $15 from each flag sold will go back to the Healing Field Foundation, which helps coordinate the event and with flag sales. Another $15 will go to the Foundation for the Tri-State Community, which will manage the money raised for the bell tower. The remaining $5 will go to either postage and shipping costs or to civic groups that want to sell flags on the park district’s behalf.

  2. I’m already using the mute button on my remote control during commercials. I use the on-line TV schedule to find things and scroll past any show on the attack or even the rebuilding (2 shows last night).

There is a memorial to a probie firefighter outside my apartment building, it is lit 24/7/365. The light adds to the light pollution that makes it hard to sleep.

  3. …and hey kids, who among you wants to be the first on your block to actually own a 911 Tenth Anniversary Memorial coin? Get silver and gold embossed coins, both for a mere $19.95. Hurry—-supplies are limited…………….

  4. Susie, I agree with you. Sentimentalize everything and trivialize it. Just another marketing opportunity. At the same time, the thousands of innocents killed in Iraq and Afganistan just ignored.

  5. One of the local TV stations is having something on Facebook asking viewers what changed for them on 9/11/2001. I was so tempted to write to them and say “nothign much” but then I thought about all of the terror that our Government has inflicted upon us and am thinking that would be a fitting addition to the project.

  6. Woodsider:
I actually did watch one of the ‘Rebuilding’ documentaries and it was quite touching. One of the main characters of the docu died a few months after filming – one of the main architects/rebuilders expected to die a short few months after the completion of the film.
10x more people were ruined by the attacks – and yes, 10x more than that were ruined by the retaliation and plain old greed.
The ‘Military Industrial Complex’ is in full swing and everybody EVERYBODY in our government is complicit. I know that.
Still, the re-building docu was quite touching.
(although I have to add that knowing that some relatives, husbands/wives, received MILLIONS in ‘we’re sorry’ money, many more didn’t…..)
Sure, I have much more to say, much to criticize, but I just wanted to say that that re-building docu was quite touching…..
