It seems to me that the purpose of TV in the “bread and circuses” operational paradigm is to provide vicarious satisfactions to a restless, frustrated population. If we see other humans achieving things that we will never achieve, even if it’s a fictional stage play, a shadow on the wall of the cave so to speak, it soothes us in some deep psychological way. Give them something to aspire to, but which they will never quite achieve. Like the Huxtables in the Cosby Show era.
