I’ve often wondered why they don’t use some version of a giant blowdryer to melt snow, so this is very satisfying to me.

Great info, but vile website design. Some drop down menu parked itself in front of the story and wouldn’t budge. One of the rare times I left a website because the site design made it so much trouble to read a simple story I just couldn’t be bothered.
One of my former bosses had a job melting snow in a downtown parking lot to make room for cars in the winter. I think they used some kind of giant pot.
The problem with melting snow is that it takes a lot of energy since it’s a state change. I can see that jet engines would work great, except for the fact that they’re pretty big polluters, burning fuel oil directly in the air –maybe if they ran on propane.
I was thinking more for real emergencies, not everyday use.
If you suddenly get a huge blizzard, you WANT a slow melt. Otherwise you get flooding.
