Yesterday during oral argument of Shelby v Holder, the Solicitor General of the United states was asked whether he was asserting that the residents of certain southern states were racists, and the Justice Department Attorney waffled. The correct answer would be, “Mr. Justice that is precisely why we are here defending the Voting Rights Act.”
