Honestly, I don’t even know if I’m putting the right information in the right places. And after going through my online debit card records for the past 24 hours, I can’t even see straight. Here’s hoping!
It’s pointless, anyway. Like so many of the long-term unemployed who were unwillingly plunked into the “self-employed” class, I now owe so much to the IRS for the past five years that I have no hope of paying — without a lottery win, anyway. And yet, General Electric gets billion-dollar refunds. What is wrong with this picture?
Imagine just getting a tax bill from your government, the way all those “uncivilized” European countries do.

Check out “Outright.” They have a free and monthly fee (9.95/month) software for the self employed. A few of my friends on 1099’s use it and say it is really easy…… I’ll send prayers to the Tax Preparation Goddess for you….. Ugh!
Dream on, both Pope Grover and the good folks at Turbo Tax, are opposed to something like smart like that. You know they just have our best interest at heart and don’t care at all about their pockets.
Why wouldn’t you pay your taxes for the past five years?
How is that even possible?
“I forgot!” Steve Martin
The IRS will settle for pennies on the dollar if you approach them right. If you think our taxing system is complicated you should take a look at the British system. What we do need in the US is a VAT or Value Added Tax.
I wouldn’t trust the IRS to send me an accurate tax bill unless the tax code were greatly simplified. And then I wouldn’t need the IRS to spend the money to send me a bill.
@major kong: i doubt it’s “didn’t” and probably more like “couldn’t”.
I am in a similar boat this year as a self-employed contractor. Ihaven’t had a full-time job with a salary and benefits since 2011, and not for lack of trying. This year, I had to get on a payment plan with the IRS. Welcome to the future!
People who are used to having taxes withheld by an employer are not prepared for having to estimate and pre-pay their own taxes quarterly. And they are especially not prepared to set aside that 15% in addition to income tax to pay the FICA and Medicare. This makes you highly aware of how much you are putting into SS, and very possessive when people talk about cutting benefits.
