  1. Shoulda had you pegged for a Monk fan. Of all the people I *just* missed, I wish I’d seen him. Fortunately, Eastwood’s “Straight, No Chaser” documentary did a pretty good job of celebrating the man.

    I was a teenage dope, and accidentally heard a late 50s version of “Epistrophy” that stopped me dead in my tracks, and straight to scouring the bins for any Monk I could find. Love love love his Blue Note/Prestige/Riverside stuff…it may be apocryphal, but legend has it that the version of “Well, You Needn’t” on “Monk’s Music” (amaaaazing album), which featured a young (and supposedly very heroin-afflicted) Coltrane as sideman, necessitated Monk to scream “Coltrane! Coltrane!” to wake him up to take an extraordinary solo. And the LP that preceded that one, “Brilliant Corners”, is perfection.

    Gonna go put some on now…it’s been a loooong week…
