06. 02 Homosexual persecution in Uganda
Right-wing, hateful fundamentalism:

Uganda’s parliament on Friday adopted an anti-homosexuality bill that will see repeat offenders jailed for life, sparking an international outcry as lawmakers hailed it as a victory against “evil”.

Deputies voted overwhelmingly in favour of the text, which has been widely condemned by rights activists and world leaders – with US President Barack Obama describing it as “odious” and Nobel Peace laureate Desmond Tutu comparing it to apartheid.

Homophobia is widespread in Uganda, where American-style evangelical Christianity is on the rise. Gay men and women in the country face frequent harassment and threats of violence, and rights activists have also reported cases of lesbians being subjected to “corrective” rapes.

The vote came a day after the Ugandan parliament passed an anti-pornography and dress-code law banning anything deemed sexually suggestive. In addition to outlawing “provocative” clothing, the anti-pornography bill will ban scantily dressed performers from Ugandan television and closely monitor what individuals watch on the Internet.

If they can’t do it here, they’ll do it there. Disgusting.

  1. Oligarchy needs scapegoats. The country has some resource that the 1% want to control. Control comes from vilifying the ‘other.’ Keeps the masses from figuring out just who the ones are really fucking them over.

  2. Uganda has been run by President Yoweri Museveni since 1986. That makes him a dictator. He’s an Anglican who’s said that “European homosexuals are recruiting in Africa,” and “gay relationships are against God’s will.” He has for years taken his lead from the American fundamentalist Christian organization The Fellowship, also known as The Family. That group is run by Doug Coe and is well connected to American politicians. Hillary once said, “Doug Coe, the longtime National Prayer Breakfast organizer, is a unique prescence in Washington: a loving spiritual mentor and guide to anyone, regardless of party or faith, who wants to deepen his or her relationship with God.” As the past Secretary of State one would assume that Hillary would know the history of Uganda, Museveni, Coe, and The Fellowship? But clearly that doesn’t matter to her.
