Impunity

I have always known that cops did things like this, but it does seem like it’s getting worse. Or is it just that it’s easier for us to get the word out?

The Brooklyn District Attorney’s office is investigating allegations that an NYPD cop wrongfully removed more than $1,000 from a man during a stop-and-frisk then pepper sprayed two people he did not arrest, the Daily News has learned.

The encounter was captured on a cell phone video, which has been turned over to prosecutors and the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau, said lawyer Robert Marinelli.

“One of the most disturbing things about the video is the other cops standing around watching and doing nothing to stop the wrongdoing,” Marinelli said Wednesday.

Marinelli represents siblings who were pepper sprayed — Lamard Joye who claims the cop took $1,300 from his pocket, which has still not been accounted, and his sister Lateefah Joye, a professional basketball player in Europe, who tried to get the cop’s badge number.

“I believe that this officer made an assumption that any money Mr. Joye possessed was obtained illegally and therefore he would not report the theft. This assumption was wrong, Mr. Joye is a hard-working taxpayer deserving respect,” said Marinelli.

The brief clip begins with the unidentified cop pushing Lamard Joye against the fence of a basketball court at the Surfside Gardens houses in Coney Island around 12:20 a.m. on Sept. 16.

Wakey wakey, sleepyhead Marinelli. This is the attitude I hate the most about police supporters (meaning people I have known who had family members who are cops). They always whine that it’s not fair to slander all cops based on the actions of a few bad ones. But not even the best of them are willing to report something like this, and god knows what retribution they would face in their crime organizations if they did. Not that many of them even see a problem with this.

  2. No group should be slandered because of a few bad apples. Including Muslims. Are you listening Mr. Maher? Not all politicians should be slandered just because there are a few bad apples. The following is a list of the 5 worst politicians in America today: (1) Bush the younger (2) Bill Clinton (3) John McCain (4) Lindsey Graham (5) Ted Cruz. The damage that these five men have done, and continue to do, to the 99% is incalculable. They should voluntarily leave the stage and never be seen or heard from again.

There are probably about 50 people who belong on the list of the 5 worst politicians in America today. Cheney should head the list, followed by the Koch twins. Yes, the twins are politicians. They spend billions to pollute the political system.
Ditto for Scalia, Thomas, Alito and Roberts — they are partisan political creatures and not objective upholders of the law.
And Scott Walker and Paul Ryan certainly deserve to be on the list as well.
