Gerrymandering was introduced to the US by the Democratic-Republican Governor of Massachusetts Elbridge Gerry in 1812.
Thomas Jefferson co-founder of the Democratic-Republican Party (1791) was strongly opposed to the centralized governance model of Alexander Hamilton’s Federalist Party (1791). Jefferson did not trust that the Federalists were sufficiently committed to the ideology of republicanism.
The Federalists were Capitalists and Religious conservatives who did not trust the “unwashed masses” to make “proper decisions.”
By 1825 Andrew Jackson had concluded that the Democratic-Republican Party had become too democratic , so he split from it and formed the Democratic Party.
Jackson’s Democratic Party was a collection of unrepentant laissez-faire Capitalists, “robber barons” and warmongers. They won the presidency in 1828.
