Burt Bacharach offered Dionne Warwick the song but she turned it down, saying it was “too country.” Gene Pitney turned it down, too, and Bacharach then
reluctantly offered it to Jackie DeShannon (he didn’t think it was that good), who recorded it in March 1965. It peaked at No. 7 in August.
