Your lies

In 1999, Shelby Lynne caught lightning in a bottle with her album “I Am Shelby Lynne.” She was a Nashville country artist who never quite made it, because she strenuously resisted the mold they tried to put her in. This album earned her a Grammy for Best New Artist; but she was not a new artist.

“I Am” had a profound effect on me, because the songs were a soundtrack to a particularly fraught relationship that had fallen apart — from the sweet joy of new love in “Gotta Get Back” to the open-heart-surgery without anesthesia of “Your Lies.”

And then? A collection of decent albums that were erratic and seemed to be missing a spine. Now, 25 years later, she has a new abum coming out, and she says, “This is maybe the record everybody wanted after I made ‘I Am.”

It’s called “Consequences Of The Crown.”

  1. I bought that CD back in the day and I too thought it funny that she won the new artist Grammy. That being said she did a great, IMHO, Album of Dusty Springfield covers.
I’m also sure you know her sister is Allison Moorer who was married to Steve Earle for a while. I don’t think they are still married…

  2. No, they got divorced years ago. Steve can’t keep ’em long, I think she was his 8th.

I liked the Dusty album, just not enough to buy it.
