  1. UN officials are saying that there are “shocking levels of need and suffering” in Afghanistan.

That’s because the international community led by the United Staes placed sanctions on Afghanistan that cut the country off from the international financial system leaving the Afghans short of cash, crippling banks and businesses, creating high inflation, and ushering in a shortage of goods and, most importantly, food.

50% of Afghans are food insecure.
20% of Afghans are food deprived.

This is an intolerable situation created by U. S. policies.

  2. It’s also created by the Taliban refusal to agree to basic human rights in exchange for lifting those sanctions. Yeah, I’m sure there’s some shitty corporate stuff going on, but most Western countries are willing to help if they promise to meet international human rights standards.

  3. Dealing with human rights issues is indeed a Gordian knot which must be solved all over the globe.

    Take Saudi Arabia foe example.

The assassin Prince of Saudi Arabia bin Salman is now manufacturing his own ballistic missiles with the technical assistance of China.
In 2019 Trump was told by his intelligence people that China was selling ballistic missiles to Saudi Arabia), and he kept the information away from Congress and the public (bin Salman had recently assassinated Khashoggi) until it was leaked in 2020.
Clearly the autocratic, assassin bin Salaman is more comfortable doing business with a police state then with a democratic-republic.
Yet US policy is to keep the brutal, anti-human rights Saudi monarchy in power.

Then we have the less than stellar human rights record of Israel, the US and so forth.
IMHO the people of Afghanistan shouldn’t be forced to starve to death because we have a beef with the Taliban.
