Weather report

Snow

We’re supposed to get an ice/slush storm early tomorrow morning, three inches for rush hour traffic.

I can’t tell you the havoc this is wreaking on our local municipal budgets. We’ve now had, I think, three times more snow than average — and it’s only the first week of February. Sure, sometimes they get FEMA reimbursement, but they have to declare a state of emergency to be eligible.

Meanwhile, California is baking without needed rain. Oy.

‘s no joke

Gas Station in the Snow

I was out shoveling snow this morning. I don’t know why I did that; it’s supposed to snow all day and it’s predicted that we’ll get nine inches.

But it was so wet and gloppy, I figured I’d just do the pathway – for the mailman, I told myself.

And this is the thing about middle age: You keep forgetting you’re old now. You remember other mornings, cheerily shoveling snow, and it seems like a nice, brisk start to the day.

It isn’t. Not unless it’s that nice, light, fluffy snow. Not like this.

So I’ve pulled out my entire right side and everything hurts. All this, for the illusion that I’m young again. Oy.

Please bail me out of pothole hell

Pot Crater

I hit a pothole. Suddenly, my exhaust system is very, very loud and very underpowered. Exhaust repairs, as you know, are very expensive. (My mechanic can’t look at it until Monday, or I’d know for sure.)

So if you can afford to donate a few bucks, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks.

I couldn’t stay. Her family wanted me to stay and make a speech, but I couldn’t. Her rotten ex was there, and as I walked past and heard him explaining — no, lecturing someone on how “disturbed” Lyn was, it was all I could do not to haul off and hit him. (I am not a violent person.) As it turns out, I wasn’t the only person who felt that way. But her family did not want a scene, so my friend and I left and went to a bar, where we drank to her memory.

Well done, Lynnie. Look at all those people who loved you!

How can you not love this story?

Probably safer outside than in the hospital:

PHILADELPHIA – January 22, 2014 (WPVI) — The winter storm will be unforgettable for one Philadelphia mom who gave birth on her way to the hospital. But it didn’t happen in a car or ambulance like you would think. Baby girl Bella was born on a sled.

Bella Sophia Bonanni weighs 7 lb. 9 oz. and was born around 6 this morning, on a sled in the middle of Cinnamon Drive in Roxborough.

“I woke up with contractions, they were about 10 minutes apart. So, we thought we had plenty of time to go to the hospital,” recalled mom Shirley Kim Bonanni.

Fabian Bonnani called his parents to come watch 2-year-old Logan and got the family car as far up Cinnamon Drive as he could. He even had a backup plan in case Shirley couldn’t walk from their house.

“It seemed like it was walkable to the car. But I had the sleds just in case it was super-slippery, because we had that ice storm like a week or two ago,” Fabian told Action News.
By the time Shirley showered and her in-laws arrived, the contractions were too quick and too strong for her to walk. So Fabian put her in the sled and tried to slide her down to the car. But Bella wouldn’t wait.

Neighbor George Leader saw the commotion outside, heard Shirley yelling, and called 911.

“I was on the phone with 911, talking him through it and he certainly delivered his own baby, right there, on the side of the road,” Leader said.

Snow Bowl?

Are you ready for some Super Snowmageddon football?

As the tristate area endures its most recent blast of heavy snow and frigid temperatures, Accuweather.com reports that a storm system will hit the Northeast on Super Bowl XLVIII weekend (Feb. 1-2).

“The timeline is for Friday to Sunday,” said Evan Myers, Accuweather.com meteorologist and chief operations officer. “Whether or not it happens during the game or before the game, and whether or not it will come as rain or snow, is still questionable.”

As the New York-New Jersey region has already seen, snow is not that unusual this time of year, according to Accuweather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Bernie Rayno.

It’s a blizzard, all right

It’s snowing pretty hard. I went out for lunch (I just had to get out of the house and a Subaru makes that possible) and it took me a half-hour to go two miles:

A wintry double whammy is descending on the Northeast on Tuesday, bringing as much as a foot of snow and another blast of arctic air.

The latest blow to a weather-beaten region promises to snarl airports and interstates, has closed schools and shuttered much of the nation’s capital. Initially forecast to be a modest blurt of cold weather, the system is now packing a real punch.

“Every once in while these little winter storms go bananas, and we think this might be the one,” said Kevin Roth, a lead meteorologist with the Weather Channel.

“Cities from Philadelphia to Boston could face a pretty bad commute home,” Roth said. “We’re expecting a good six to 10 inches. It will be snowing pretty hard.”

A shortage of propane gas in the Midwest and Northeast is impacting millions of homes and businesses in rural areas beyond the reach of utilities.

Blizzard conditions are expected along the heavily populated Interstate 95 corridor. Washington, D.C., is set to see about a half-foot of snow and wind gusts of 30 mph, while Boston could see around 8 inches and wind gusts up to 40 mph.
